BOROVETS
Overview:
Borovets is the oldest and biggest ski resort in Bulgaria, situated on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountains at the foot of the highest peak in the country, Moussala. Nestled among old pine forests the resort was founded in 1896 as a hunting place for the kings and gradually developed into a modern resort with luxury hotels, restaurants and a superb network of ski runs varying in difficulty. There is also a wide choice of après-ski entertainment and nightlife as well as organised trips to places of interest in the Rila Mountains. Winters are mild and snowy and the air is clean, clear and invigorating.
Skiing:
Skiing is divided into two main sectors, with the Markoudjik sector offering the best skiing above the tree line, the highest ski point reaching 8,333ft (2,540m). Borovets has a total of 22 miles (35km) of ski pistes, and has recently installed new lift facilities with lighting and sound systems, which allows for night skiing and snowboarding. The resort also boasts modern snowmaking machines ensuring that conditions stay excellent. Snowboarders enjoy the Rotata half-pipe with a vertical drop of 1,050ft (320m), suitable for advanced riders at its upper end and beginners at the lower end.
Shopping:
A burst in popularity as a winter sports wonderland in recent years has meant a boom in the retail industry in pretty Borovets town. The busy shopping street in front of the Rila hotel is a beehive of open-fronted small shops, with a colourful market atmosphere, selling all sorts of goods from ski gear and souvenirs to cigarettes and cheap CDs. Most visitors find prices here much lower than elsewhere in Europe.
Restaurants:
The number of taverns, eat-in pubs, take away joints and outdoor restaurants is growing in Borovets every season. The choice has become very eclectic, from Kentucky Fried Chicken and pizza to Chinese. Establishments like 'The Hungry Horse' cater deliciously for British tastes. Other recommendations are Mamacita's on the main shopping street where the steaks are legendary, and White Magic, opposite the Samokov Hotel, with good food and a great atmosphere. Visitors should not forget to indulge in some of the Bulgarian fine wines along with their dinner. Eating out in Borovets is also very good value.
Nightlife:
Every night is party time in Borovets, which has a reputation for being one of the 'hotspots' for nightlife on the European ski circuit. The fun is fuelled by the fact that drinks are cheap, there are long happy hours and sometimes drinks are even offered for free. All the bars, clubs and discos serve the well-known international brands as well as local beers like Astika, Zagorka and Kamenitza. Beware the national drink, Rakia: it is rather strong! Recommended party palaces are Club Slide in the Hotel Mura, the renowned Buzz Bar, favoured by Brits, and the Black Tiger karaoke bar.
Activities:
Off the ski slopes Borovets has all the usual amenities of a winter resort, and many hotels offering indoor swimming pools, saunas and gyms. Night skiing is also available from 5pm to 10pm. Visitors can also take excursions to nearby resorts or places of interest, like the Rila Monastery. Ice-skating and skidoos are also an option for chilly fun in the sun.
Why You Should Invest in Borovets Property Now!!!
The Bulgarian Government has recently announced plans for a major expansion of Borovets that will turn it into a world class mountain resort.
The project is called Super Borovets and it's main aim is to expand the current resort of Borovets and turn it into an all year round holiday destination. It will incorporate the town of Samokov and the village of Beli Iskar, thus transforming Borovets into a mega resort. The existing facilities will be improved and vastly expanded. Currently Borovets has around 55 km of pistes. This will be extended by 100km creating a huge ski domain. Around 300-400 million Euros is to be invested and the Bulgarian government are supporting the project.
No other resort in Bulgaria has so far had such a project or received such extensive investment. As a result, the Super Borovets project ensures that the Borovets area and Borovets property is a top place to invest in - probably one of the best places in the whole of Bulgaria. Borovets property prices are still relatively low but this area is set to boom in the coming years.
The project will start in 2007 and is expected to be completely ready by 2010. It will be delivered in 3 stages.
Stage I – Borovets improvements
The first stage of the project involves the upgrading and modernization of the existing facilities in the current Borovets resort at 1350m. The tourist infrastructure of the resort will be improved and new facilities and hotels built. The slopes will be upgraded to European standards and new lifts and ski runs installed.
Stage II – Lower Borovets
Further accommodation and new ski runs will be created in the triangle of between Samokov, Beli Iskar and Borovets. A new tourist village will be created just outside Samokov town. This area will target tourists who cannot afford to stay in the higher parts of the mountain. Tourist centres and leisure facilities will be created at this level and also an 18-hole golf course.
Stage III – VIP Zone
In the areas Shumnatitsa/Bialata Poliana (1400m) and Gvardeiska Poliana/Mecha Glava (1600m) new luxury hotels and ski chalets will be built. In these areas, village and eco tourism will be encouraged. Folklore restaurants, model farms, riverside parks and a horse riding centre are all part of the plans. In the Bialata Poliana area there are plans for a spectacular 18-hole mountain golf course and a gondola linking the area to the Borovets ski domain. As this area is high in the mountains every effort will be made to ensure the development is eco-friendly and sustainable.
